Peloponnesian Stalagmites and Soda Straw Stalactites as Climate Archives Stable Isotopes in New Speleothem Material from Kapsia Cave, Peloponnese, Greece

چکیده
This study presents results from stable isotope analyses of a modern stalagmite and three soda straw stalactites from Kapsia Cave, the Peloponnese, Greece. The resulting values from the stalagmite are put into context of local meteorological data, as well as previous research from Kapsia Cave. The potential for using soda straw stalactites as complementary climate archives on shorter time scales on the Peloponnese is also explored. The isotopic values in the stalagmite confirm a strong link to the amount effect on an annual scale. On a seasonal scale, variations in the isotopic signal can be detected as a result of i.e. increased cave air temperature in summer. The stable isotope values in the soda straw stalactites largely correspond to previous isotopic measurements in Kapsia Cave. The trend of the isotopic carbon signal in two of the straws also strengthens earlier theories suggesting a link to CO2 concentrations in the external atmosphere. Soda straws are, thus, encouraged for use in future climate studies, although the sampling method should be further explored. The results of this study contribute to an increased understanding of Peloponnesian speleothems in relation to environmental processes and new insights are suggested into the use of soda straw stalactites as climate archives.

Morphologic and Dimensional Linkage between Recently Deposited Speleothems and Drip Water from Browns Folly Mine , Wiltshire , England
The internal structure of stalagmites has been scrutinized intensely over the past few decades because of the potential paleoclimatic records contained within (Allison 1926; Gascoyne et al. 1981; Genty & Quinif 1996; McDermott et al. 1999; Railsback et al. 1994). However, understanding the external morphology may assist in the elucidation of the processes responsible for speleothem development ...

We have measured the stable isotope ratios of carbon in a suite of recent cave deposits (< 200 years) from the San Saba County, Texas, USA. The methodology for dating these deposits using excess 210pb was recently established [Baskaran and Iliffe, 1993]. The carbon isotope ratios of these samples, spanning the thne period -• 1800-1990 AD, reflect the carbon isotope ratio of atmospheric CO2 for ...

The increasing popularity of computer graphics applications in video games and movie production has resulted in a growing demand for the development of virtual environments with rich visual scene content. As such, the use of procedural content generation techniques is an attractive solution that can avoid the manual effort involved in the creation of highly complex scenes, by automating the gen...

The application of stable isotopes in speleothem records requires an understanding of the extent to which speleothem calcite isotopic compositions refl ect the compositions of the cave waters from which they precipitate. To test for equilibrium precipitation, modern speleothem calcite was grown on glass plates, so that the carbon and oxygen isotope composition of the calcite and the water from ...
متن کاملAssessing the variability of precipitation during the Holocene from stalagmite records
Stalagmites can be dated very precisely with Th/U. The growth rate of stalagmites is generally in the range between 30 and 100 μm year. Stable isotopes sampled at a resolution of 50-100 μm yield information with a resolution ranging from a sub-decadal to centennial scale. Precipitation determines the growth periods of the stalagmites and the stable isotope signal is mainly a proxy for the inten...
